Patriotism Gone Awry

Ken Mehlman is gay. The former RNC chair was head of the major campaign against gay marriage during the Bush years. The irony is blindingly obvious but seemingly more of a model that Republicans today follow, hypocritical.

Since the majority of Republicans on the hill are wealthy individuals, they’ve been opposed to any program that takes money from their pocket and ends up elsewhere. They dream up ways to make quality concepts sound un-Amercian (i.e. Socialism) to scare those that blindingly support them. It is unlikely any of the Right will be “‘Mehlman’d” in this regard even if we were to collectively vote them out of office so I cannot reasonable expect that they will see the light of day anytime soon.

Surprisingly, Mehlman is now rallying to support revocation of Prop 8 and will actively pursue marriage equality. As John Stewart eloquently (and sarcastically) suggested “Why would he have wanted to support a group he didn’t know he was a part of, before he became a part of it”. Which is the crux of my disgust with the party as of late.

Take into consideration the following: Immigration, Gay Rights, Civil Rights, Social Security, and Health Care. All hot button issues and yet I cannot dig up a single instance where the Right has advocated support for any of them.

  • - Immigration they believe is the demise of our country in that these PEOPLE are the sole basis of crime and job loss.
  • - Gay Rights. Now, I believe with Mehlman coming out of the closet, the total count of Right supporters for marriage equality is up to 1.
  • - Civil Rights. Do a search for Confederate History Month.
  • - The Right has supported privatization since I can remember. However, I’m unsure how anyone has the ability to retire given inflation and salary base today.
  • - 100% of the Right was opposed to Government Run Heath Care despite the overwhelming evidence that it would have helped our country significantly.

I ask to you (the reader) why does the Right hate America so much? The very party to champion the concept of Patriotism seems a bit un-Patriotic.
